Privacy Policy
Last updated 12 October 2026
The short version
We keep two things about you: who you are, and what you like. Your partner sees the taste map you built and the pieces you marked — that is the product. They never see what you bought or when, because we never learn it: you check out on the retailer's own site, not here. We do not sell your data and we do not run ads.
The rest of this page is the same thing said precisely.
Who this is about
The Perfect Hint is operated by The Perfect Hint LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company, of 8253 Hardwood Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80908, United States. We are the controller of the personal data this policy describes. This policy covers theperfecthint.com and nothing else — the retailers we link out to have their own policies, and once you follow a link you are on their site under their terms.
It is written for people in the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union, and it describes the rights each of those places gives you further down.
What we collect
- ·Your account. Email address, first and last name, and your sign-in sessions. This is held by Clerk, our identity provider; we keep a mirrored copy of your email and name so pages can render without a round trip, and it is updated when you change them. If you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with Clerk and confirms the email is yours. We never see your Google password, and we get no access to anything else in your Google account, such as your contacts or your mail.
- ·Your taste map. The metals, gemstones and styles you marked in the taste deck or edited by hand, how strongly each one counts, and roughly the price range you swiped in. We also keep the counts behind each trait — "9 of 11 rose gold pieces" — so we can show you where a trait came from. If you answer the short questions before the deck, we also keep the kinds of jewelry you wear, your favorite stone shapes, the things you would never wear — including, if you tell us, a metal you react to — and your fit details: ring size, necklace length and whether your ears are pierced. Every one of these is optional.
- ·Your hints. The pieces you marked, plus any occasion or note you attached.
- ·Your partnership. The fact that you and one other account are linked, and the invitations you create: each is a link, and, if you ask us to email it, the address you typed for the person you are inviting.
- ·What you type into search. If you are signed in and write a sentence rather than a keyword, we send that sentence to Anthropic to turn it into filters. We send the sentence and nothing else — not your name, not your account, not your taste map. Signed out, search is by keyword and nothing is sent to Anthropic.
- ·Security and running records. Our host keeps standard request logs, which include your IP address and the address of the page you asked for — and a search you typed is part of that address. When something goes wrong we log your account ID with the error so we can fix it. Each written search also leaves a short-lived record of your account ID and the time, so one account cannot run an unlimited number.
If someone invites you. When a person invites you by email, we receive your email address from them, and Clerk uses it to send you the invitation. You are not linked to anyone unless you open the link and choose to link. We delete your address from the invitation as soon as you accept it, and within a day of it expiring or being replaced. An invitation expires 14 days after it is created.
Why we use it
We use your data only to run the product you signed up for, and for nothing we have not listed here. If you are in the UK or the EU, the law asks us to name the legal basis for each use:
| Purpose | What it uses | Legal basis (UK and EU) |
|---|---|---|
| Running your account and signing you in | Your account details and sessions | Contract — we need it to provide the service |
| Showing your partner your taste map and hints | Your taste map, hints, notes and partnership | Contract — sharing with the partner you chose is the service |
| Emailing an invitation you asked us to send | The invitee's email address | Legitimate interests — delivering the invitation you chose to send |
| Turning a written search into filters (signed in only) | The search sentence | Contract — it is a feature of the service |
| Earning a commission when you follow a retailer link | The click, recorded by AWIN | Legitimate interests — the commission is what keeps the service free |
| Keeping the service secure and within its costs | Request and error logs, and search-limit records | Legitimate interests — preventing abuse and fixing faults |
What your partner can and cannot see
This is the part people actually want answered, so it is the part we are most specific about.
They can see
- ·Your taste map — the traits, and how strongly each counts. That is its whole purpose.
- ·Your answers to the questions before the deck: what you wear, what you would never wear, and your fit details, so they can get the size right.
- ·The pieces you marked as hints, with the occasion and note you attached.
- ·That the two of you are linked.
They cannot see
- ·What you searched for.
- ·What you browsed. We do not record which designs you were shown — not for them, and not for ourselves.
- ·What you bought, or when — see below; we do not have this at all.
- ·The evidence behind your taste traits — the swipe counts are yours alone.
Nobody is linked to you without saying yes. An invitation is a single-use link that stops working after 14 days. Whoever opens it sees who it is from, and nothing is shared until they choose to link.
Either of you can end it. Unlink from your partnership page at any time. Access ends at once, in both directions. Each of you keeps your own hints and taste map, the "I am buying this" marks between you are deleted, and neither of you is notified.
There are no notifications in this product. We do not email your partner when you browse, save, or buy anything. The only email we ever send on your behalf is the invitation you choose to send.
What we never have
We never see a purchase. We are an affiliate site: when you follow a link to a retailer, you buy on their site, with their checkout. We do not take payments, we never receive your card details, and no record of an order exists here. The retailer's affiliate network tells us that a sale happened so we can be paid a commission — it does not tell us who you are.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your data, we do not run advertising, and we do not share anything with data brokers. We use these processors to run the product:
- ·Clerk — accounts, sign-in (including sign-in with Google) and invitation emails.
- ·Supabase — the database holding your taste map, hints and partnership.
- ·Vercel — hosting, which means the request and error logs described above.
- ·Anthropic — turning a written search sentence into filters, as described above.
- ·AWIN — the affiliate network behind the outbound retailer links, which records the click that earns the commission.
- ·Replicate — image similarity for "more like this". This runs over catalog photographs, not over anything about you.
We do not currently run product analytics: nothing about how you use the site is sent to an analytics provider. If that changes, this page changes with it.
Where it is processed. Clerk, Supabase, Vercel and Anthropic process your data in the United States; our database is in Supabase's US East (Ohio) region. AWIN is operated from the United Kingdom. Replicate receives catalog photographs only, never anything about you. If you are in the UK or the EU, sending your data to the United States is an international transfer, and we rely on the safeguards the law provides for it.
Cookies and your browser
Clerk sets the cookies that keep you signed in. They are strictly necessary: without them you cannot stay signed in. We set no analytics or advertising cookies, and we do not track you across other sites, so there is nothing for a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal to switch off.
If you answer the taste questions, use the taste deck or save a hint before creating an account, that work is held in your own browser so it is not lost — it never reaches us until you sign up, at which point we offer to carry it over. We also remember locally that you dismissed the getting-started strip. Clearing your site data clears all of it.
When you follow a link to a retailer, it passes through AWIN so the retailer can pay us a commission. AWIN and the retailer may set their own cookies, under their own policies.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account details, in our database | Until you delete your account |
| Your taste map and the counts behind it | Until you clear it, or delete your account |
| Your hints, occasions and notes | Until you remove them, or delete your account |
| Your partnership | Until either of you ends it, or deletes your account |
| “I am buying this” marks | Until the hint is removed, the partnership ends, or either account is deleted |
| Invitations you create | The link stops working after 14 days, or once it has been used. Any email address you typed for the person you invited is deleted when they accept, and within a day of the link expiring or being replaced. The rest of the record is kept until you delete your account. |
| Written search sentences | Not stored by us. Held briefly in server memory so a repeated search can be answered without asking again |
| Search-limit records (your account ID and a time) | Deleted by a daily job once more than a day old |
| Request and error logs at our host | Up to 14 days, depending on our hosting plan |
| What is kept in your browser | Until you clear your site data |
Deleting your account deletes what we hold. When you delete your account from your account page, we delete your account details, taste map, hints and notes, the marks you made on a partner's hints, the invitations you created and your partnership, and your former partner loses access at once. Clerk deletes the account itself.
Your rights, and how to use them
Most of what you can ask of us, you can do yourself:
- ·See or correct your name and email on your account page.
- ·Change or clear your taste map at any time from your taste page. Remove a trait and it stops affecting what anyone sees.
- ·Remove a hint and your partner stops seeing it.
- ·End your partnership from your partnership page.
- ·Delete your account from your account page. This deletes your data, as described above.
- ·Ask for a copy of your data, or anything else below, by writing to coryh@theperfecthint.com. We may ask you to write from the email address on your account, so we know the request is yours.
In the UK and the EU you have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict how we use it, to receive it in a portable form, and to object to any use we base on legitimate interests. We answer within one month. You can also complain to a data protection authority: in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office; in the EU, the authority where you live or work.
In the United States, including California, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, to access it, to correct it, to have it deleted, and not to be treated differently for using any of these rights. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. You may use an authorized agent to make a request. We answer within 45 days.
Children
The Perfect Hint is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you think someone under 18 has created an account, write to coryh@theperfecthint.com and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or who we share it with, we will update this page and the date at the top of it.
